Clay bars are made in many different forms and sizes. There are 2 broad categories of clay: non-formed and formed. In the former it is the amount of clay used that determines the shape and reflectivity of the finish while in the later it is amount of time or temperature spent on the application that determines the shape and matte. Generally speaking, clay is a one-time-use item that is heated and/or heated and a pressure washer. For ideal results pre-formed automotive clays are highly recommended.
It is critical to wash the automotive clay bar or its residue with a high pressure spray prior to the application. Most commercial Clay Bars have a lubricant which prevents the residue from scratching the paint and possibly causing a While claying is abrasive, it does not have the high solids and acidic nature of surface scratches. It is critical to remove all residue before pre-formulating with the clay.
To prepare the clays, make sure the bar is clean and dry before you begin claying. Do not use harsh ammonia-based cleaning agents as this can cause oxidation and acidification of the paint. If the vehicle has listed EuropeSlide, smoothen the bar with a 320 or 165 degree heat. Parts that require aluminum oxide or ground nickel can be enhanced by the use of a plate coating process. This is where tiny particles of the appropriate metal, mixed with small amounts of clay, are applied to the part. The appropriate texture is then achieved by varying the amount of the appropriate color.
Because aluminum oxide or ground nickel is more extensively used these days and because there is a lower cost in producing these elements, premium automotive clays are typically more abrasive than their lower quality counterparts. Therefore using a lesser brand such as demini or locker stock would be somewhat better in this situation.
Notably, automotive clays offer a variety of benefits, drawbacks and specialty applications that make them useful in varied situations. For instance depending on the part, a clay bar may need to be heated and/or allowed to cool for full effect whereas many clays offer temperature and duration of heating/cooling to accomplish the same result.
